Bali Driver becomes ‘millionaire’ after finding lost phone on beach
A Bali driver has become a multi-millionaire after finding a tourist’s phone on a dark beach – but there’s a catch.
In the ultimate Hail Mary, a Balinese driver in Canggu has become a “millionaire” after helping a tourist find his phone on the beach.
British tourist Archie Davey has gathered almost 2 million views on social media after sharing a clip of the search online.
“When you lose your phone on Canggu Beach so set a $2 million reward for the drivers,” the tourist wrote.
Footage shows several GoJek scooter drivers, who usually offer lifts and food deliveries, combing the beach in search of the phone.
After the elation of the find, the footage then explains the too-good-to-be-true reward.
The tourist is shown counting out 20 Rp100,000 (Indonesian Rupiah) notes.
At a conversion rate of AU$0.000098 to Rp1, the driver took home the equivalent of AU$200.
However, while that’s by no means a fortune in the Australian context, the reward represents just short of an average Balinese service worker’s monthly salary.
Mr Davey’s followers said it was a huge offer for a reward.
“Bro is casually being Mr Beast,” one said.
“The easiest way to be a millionaire,” joked another.
One sincere Indonesian follower wrote: “Bro, it may be cheap for you, but man, thank you, you just made someone’s day.”
Others added praise to the feel-good nature of the video.
One wrote: “May god bless you multiple times than that brother.”
Another added: “I love the Balinese energy.”
