On the other side of “town”, the French-Vietnamese party chef Amy Hamilton is throwing down at Liberte in Albany London Hotel is another good reason to explore outside the city limits. 

Serving up creative fusion cocktails and a menu drawing on influences from Vietnam and France, using surrounding produce from the region. The dishes are ideal for sharing and include delicious things like moreish truffle fries and coconut vinegar braised beef ribs.

Opening a restaurant in the calamity of 2020 would have been a bold decision, but Acqua e Sale is nothing if not bold. They have a very reasonably priced italian menu that draws heavily from the nearby ocean, serving big bowls of squid-ink seafood spaghetti full of clams, mussels and fish, King scallops served with stracciatella cheese and a gorgeous Calamari Piccanti.

A night out on the tiles

The flashy splash Crown Theatre is COVID-safe and ready to party with iconic musical, The Boy from Oz, the magnificent smash-hit musical based on the life of legendary Australian entertainer, Peter Allen. Best to book in advance as there are capacity restrictions.

The gorgeous deco building that’s home to W.A Ballet is once again lit-up and accepting visitors and the company will be hosting a mini-season from the 23-27th of March of experiential short works titled Genesis

The West Australia Opera will launch its 2021 season with The Barber of Seville in April, with James Clayton playing Figaro and Brigitte Heuser as Rosina.

A natural high

The Botanic Garden on Mount Eliza is the perfect place to take a moment, with sweeping views of the city and acres of unique and diverse plant life from Western Australia.

Just 45 minutes out of the city you can reach the beginning of the world-famous Munda Biddi Trail in Mundaring. If you’re looking for a great escape without breaking the budget, this is the microadventure of a lifetime. Just don a backpack, hire some bikes, and go. 

The Munda Biddi Trail, which means ‘path through the forest’ in the Noongar Aboriginal language, is an incredible, unparalleled off-road cycling adventure spanning 1000km of dynamic terrain, split into nine sections. Of course, 1000km is a long, long way to ride, so depending on your skill level and stamina; it’s up to you which sections you want to journey through.

Back on the coast, the Australian Sea Lion is the world's rarest, yet can be found in the protected waters of the Shoalwater Marine Park, just outside Perth. While these beautiful mammals can be enjoyed year round, most tours operate from mid-September to late June, when they provide least impact on the breeding colonies.

The nuts and bolts
