Robert Irwin’s surprising favourite Aussie holiday spot

Robert Irwin is a Queenslander through and through, so his favourite Aussie holiday spot may surprise you.

Robert Irwin is a Queenslander born and bred, but when it comes to an Aussie holiday, surprisingly he is a huge fan of down south.

When news.com.au asked the 20-year-old conservationist and media personality to name his favourite destination, he said it was “a very tough question” but could narrow it down to two spots: North Queensland and Tasmania.

While North Queensland seems an obvious pick for the son of ‘The Crocodile Hunter’, Tassie is a less predictable choice.

“I know what you’re thinking – two of the most polar opposite places, but they both have such rugged and raw natural beauty,” Irwin said.

His must-visit spot is Cradle Mountain, one of Tasmania’s most iconic sights.

“There are so many stunning hikes and incredibly friendly wildlife,” Irwin said.

“I also enjoy the Tasman Peninsula, Launceston, Swansea and the stunning Tarkine Wilderness just to name a few spots.”

Further north, Irwin said he loved to explore the mangroves and estuaries in croc country.

“At a good distance away from the water’s edge of course,” he added.

“Surprisingly, Cairns also has some top-notch mountain biking, so if you love an adrenaline hit, it has got you covered.”

Irwin believes all Aussies have got to experience the far north and far south at least once.

“To sum it all up, Tasmania has Tassie devils, and North Queensland has crocs. What more do you need,” he said.

While Irwin has always been in the public eye, his celebrity is certainly rising.

After joining TikTok in May 2022, he has amassed 6.8 millions followers with more than 80 million likes across his videos. Over on Instagram, he has another 5.1 million followers.

Last year, Irwin was on breakfast television filling in for weatherman Sam Mac on Sunrise and this year, he will be replacing Dr Chris Brown as co-host of I’m A Celebrity … Get Me Out Of Here!

He will soon be heading off to South Africa for filming and he tells news.com.au the one thing he won’t go without is his camera.

“We have supported wildlife conservation efforts there for many years and have spent so much time photographing the unique wildlife of South Africa,” he said.

“My new I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here! hosting role will definitely give me the opportunity to further pursue my passion for photography.”

But before he heads off to the jungle, Irwin has a different kind of filming gig.

On Tuesday, he was announced as ambassador of G’day Parks, a network of 300 regional caravan and holiday parks.

As part of the partnership, Irwin will be the face of G’day Parks video series ‘Holiday Hacks’, sharing unique travel advice like the best way to stay hydrated, how to quickly sort out soggy shoes and turn your phone into a powerful flashlight.

“G’day Parks have a real, shared passion with connecting Australians to what matters most – family, adventure, and the great outdoors,” Irwin said, speaking of the new partnership.

“Australia is such a vast and spectacular place, and I have always believed that we Aussies should explore our own backyard and G’day Parks makes that easy.”

G’day Parks chief marketing officer Lahnee White said Irwin’s “authentic, down-to-earth character” and “commitment to regional Australia and our beautiful natural environments” made him the perfect ambassador.
