A NEW virtual reality ride at Dreamworld will have thrillseekers swooping, diving, gliding and jetting over iconic spots like Sydney Harbour, Surfers Paradise and the Barossa Valley.

Dreamworld has unveiled the new $17 million Sky Voyager ride it hopes will lure back visitors this summer.

The ride is described as an “immersive live-action 4K adventure” which uses motion-programmed seating and special sensory effects to give riders the experience of “flying” over famous spots across Australia.

The ride is the first of its kind in Australia and features six gondolas of 10 seats on an electrical motion platform suspended in front of a massive dome screen.

The experiences include gliding over the ocean towards Surfers Paradise and Sydney Harbour at sunset, hovering above a raft on Queensland’s Tully River and hot air ballooning in the picturesque Barossa Valley in South Australia.

The Gold Coast theme park will be hoping the impressive new ride lures people back this summer, after it saw a dramatic drop in visitor numbers following the Thunder River Rapids tragedy that claimed four lives in October 2016.

The theme park’s owner Ardent Leisure reported a $88.6 million loss for the past financial year.

Dreamworld said the ride was built using mostly southeast Queensland businesses and created more than 200 jobs.

“The excitement is certainly building here at Dreamworld as we get closer to opening this state-of-the-art attraction, which will be a favourite for all ages,” Dreamworld’s general manager of marketing Philip Hancox said.

“A lot of people have been very keen to find out what the ride would be named but good things take time, just like the ideal name for a world-class ride.

“Sky Voyager is the perfect name, as it will take guests on an Australia voyage by air, creating a truly unforgettable experience, which will only be available at Dreamworld.”

Experience Oz will be an ambassador for the ride, which is the first of many new rides and attractions being rolled out at Dreamworld over the next 12 to 18 months, the Courier Mail reports.
