Dear Debbie. Signed, Queensland. A cutting letter to an ex (cyclone)

SHE swept them off their feet, but this is no love letter. Check out the emotional Facebook post that’s got the world siding with Queensland.

Queensland — the love story’s not over yet.
Queensland — the love story’s not over yet.

IT’S a heartful letter to a hurtful ex — but this is no ordinary hate letter.

As the clean-up from ex-Cyclone Debbie continues, the official Visit Queensland Facebook page has posted a cutting response to her trail of destruction.

CYCLONE DEBBIE: WHAT TOURISTS NEED TO KNOW

SHOULD I CANCEL MY WHITSUNDAYS HOLIDAY PLANS?

QUEENSLAND’S BEST KEPT SECRETS

“Dear Debbie, You won’t be missed,” it reads.

“You swept us off our feet. But we’ve survived your type before.”

Vowing to fight back in the wake of the cyclone, the letter is signed “Queensland”.

While Debbie has moved on, leaving the state to pick up the pieces, the love story’s not over yet for the state.

Messages of love and support have been pouring in from Facebookers around Australia and the globe.

“Dear Debbie,

You won’t be missed. You swept us off our feet.

But we’ve survived your type before.

And will, no doubt, again. We won’t be stopped by you.

Our roofs are blown, fences down, crops uprooted.

True, we are tired and shaken. But we’ve got this.

We’ll rebuild and we’ll recover. We’ll stand strong and tall.

Even better than before.

Because we are.

Queensland.

P.S. But we need a holiday first.”

The world is backing Queensland, with messages of support streaming in from proud Queenslanders and visitors alike.

However, a few took the post a little personally:

The post comes as the tourism industry, the community and Queensland visitors join forces to help get the hard-hit Whitsunday Coast region back on its feet.

At Airlie Beach, the Fat Frog Beach Cafe has been offering free coffee in return for a $5 donation to help the community rebuild.

“We had some people pay $50 for their coffee,” the cafe posted of the response to its promotion at the weekend.

Meanwhile, the team from Moloko Homes at Airlie Beach has been offering its services for free to those in need to “make Airlie beautiful again”.

Several groups have also been co-ordinating donations and support for those affected by Cyclone Debbie, including organisations such as GIVIT (Goods for Good Causes) and Aidtaskers.

Hamilton Island has announced that it will welcome back its first guests from April 8 in a reduced capacity.

In the aftermath of the cyclone, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull called on holiday-makers not to cancel their plans to visit Queensland and the Whitsundays region.

“The most important thing ... is to make sure the damage is repaired,” he said.

“But above all ... to get the message out that the sun will be shining again, the resorts will be open again and people shouldn’t be cancelling their holidays.
