The internet has declared popular seaside town Byron Bay, as where the most expensive beer can be found, setting punters back almost 20 dollars for a normal pint.

In a now-viral Reddit post, a user shared their receipt after having tucked into the waterfront pub Beach Hotel Byron Bay for a few drinks.

The receipt showed that just one pint of Peroni cost them a shocking $19.40 each.

The user had in total three pints of Peroni ($19.40 each) and one pint of Stone and Wood ($17.40), making it a whopping cost of $75.60 for a few drinks at a pub.

The post has led to a mixture of reactions from the internet.

A few were astounded by the expensive cost of beer, while others were no longer surprised at the costs of visiting a tourist hot spot.

One user agreed with the sentiment of the original poster and said, “I went there a month ago and got a pint of stone and wood and my reaction was the same! Insane! Place was empty too.”

Another also agreed and said: “Never been to Byron; I always assumed here in Sydney we had some of the worst tourist gouging, but $20 a pint? That‘s insane.”

Meanwhile, others weren’t so shocked.

One user commented: “Looks about right for the Beachy. You are paying to be in Byron.”

It comes as the buzzing holiday destination has increasingly copped criticism from local residents and tourists alike for it’s insane cost of living.

Recently, a young Australian residing in Byron Bay named Georgia, complained on TikTok, about the ‘Byron tax’- a term dubbed in regard to the town’s high cost of renting and living,

“Everywhere you go, think of normal prices and make it more expensive. That’s Byron. Even if you’re at Woolies, add a couple extra dollars to literally everything,” Georgia said.

She then took aim at landlords who charge up to $400 per week for a room in a house.

‘$400!? I don’t even have to explain that. People will probably pay that as well – it’s just disgusting,’ she said.

Despite the town’s rising rental prices, it has recently been reported that the property hot spot has suffered a serious decrease in value.

Byron Bay has seen a significant drop of 20.5 per cent in house values down to $2.3 million, according to CoreLogic’s annual Best of the Best report.
