Crabber finds a human skull on the beach at Mandorah
A MAN who was crabbing at his favourite spot returned with a rather interesting bounty. Little did he know the area was actually an Aboriginal burial site.
CHRIS Johnson was crabbing at his favourite spot at Wagait Beach, Mandorah and returned with an interesting bounty – five crabs and one human skull.
The Wagait Beach resident was walking along a secluded section of beach on Friday afternoon looking for shells when he made the macabre discovery.
“I was a bit freaked out – you don’t see a skull on the beach every day,” he said.
He said he considered popping the skull on his quad bike for a few selfies but thought better of it.
“I was a bit worried about karma and all of that … I called the cops straight away,” he said.
“The tide was coming in so they told me to hide it in a bush.”
Mr Johnson said he was getting a bit concerned when the police were a no-show almost 24 hours after he made the call.
“There’s a human skull in the mangroves and I’m the only one in the world who knows where it is,” he said.
“The Territory is laid-back but this getting a bit too laid-back, I found a skull and nobody has showed up … It could be Peter Falconio’s. It’s just weird how the cops haven’t got back to me … they haven’t given me a courtesy call.”
A police spokesman said the area was a known Aboriginal burial site and relevant authorities had been contacted.
The area where the skull was found is only accessible by quad bike.
“At the end of the day it was a human being and it needs to be put to rest,” he said.
