SYDNEY Urban Adventures has a new walking tour taking visitors back to a time when rum ruled The Rocks.

The tour takes visitors through the back alleys and lanes of the city's oldest district and reveals stories focusing on the black-market rum trade between settlers, convicts, publicans and sailors which led to Australia's first (and only) military coup, The Rum Rebellion.

It also includes a wine appreciation lesson at Wine Odyssey Australia - formerly a brothel - and visits to Phillips Foote Restaurant, named after Australia's first governor, Harts Pub and The Heritage to try local ales and enjoy a barbecue dinner. Guests on the tour will also get to see significant archeological sites, including excavated building foundations underneath Sydney Harbour YHA.

The four-hour tour costs $145 a person.
