My night in Sydney's first pop-up hotel

TRAVEL reporter Angela Saurine tests out the luxury pop-up hotel which appeared in Sydney this week.

WHEN we arrive for an overnight stay at Sydney's first pop-up hotel, we are greeted with glasses of champagne, a picnic basket and an all-encompassing view of the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

The basket is practically overflowing with cheese, crackers, fruit, Tim Tams, burger rings and chocolate bars.

I want to eat everything, but I know I have a three-course meal prepared by a personal chef to come so I hold back as much as I can.

We sit at the table on the wooden deck outside our luxury tent, which is decorated with a candle and red carnations in a vase, and watch the sun set.

Ferries whiz back and forth across the harbour and joggers run along the foreshore as we see the lights of Luna Park illuminate at twilight.

It's cold outside but we have an outdoor heater to keep us warm, as well as fluffy beige blankets.

Having a concierge, waiter, chef and security guard just for the two of us does feel a little excessive, but I don't complain.

Inside the carpeted tent are two double beds, a plywood coffee table, a couple of chairs, a small fridge and a bathroom with a portaloo-style toilet and sink with tank water, which is a little chilly.

A modesty curtain separates the two beds, which each have a pair of Peter Alexander pyjamas next to them for us to wear.

I'm relieved when I learn there are electric blankets on the bed, especially since we have to turn the heaters off overnight.

The wind picks up just before we retire and during the night I hear it blowing ferociously and fear we might take off like Dorothy's house in the Wizard of Oz.

But I wake up, a little cold, in the same place to the sounds of bird chirping.

It really is a special, once-in-a-lifetime kind of experience.

I took my friend Michelle along for the night but - no offence to her - it would be the perfect place to go with a romantic partner and ideal for a marriage proposal or a wedding anniversary.
