Secret Aussie destinations you’ve missed

AUSSIE travel photographer Tim Coulson has travelled the globe. He believes that no other country can provide more incredible outdoor experiences than Australia.

He’s teamed up with retailer Kathmandu to showcase his favourite spots in our backyard this summer and is encouraging Australians to do the same.

From mind-blowing sunsets and ancient gorges, to lush rainforests and hidden waterfalls, here are Tim’s recommendations for a holiday in our backyard:

SOUTH ARM, TASMANIA

Only 45 minutes from Hobart, South Arm is the place to go if you feel like getting away from the world, stress, traffic and everything that comes with city living, says Tim.

“It honestly feels like you are a world away,” he says, “I love to pitch a tent under the stars and photograph the milky way, and, if you’re lucky, the southern lights (aurora australis) may come out to play.”

COAL COAST, SYDNEY

Less than an hour south of Sydney lies a stretch of coastline that rivals anywhere in the world in terms of rugged beauty, according to Tim.

“Starting on the cliff tops of Stanwell Park and tracking south down the coast to the beaches of Bulli are some of our backyard’s most beautiful locations, all within 20 minutes of each other.

“This stretch of coast has mind-blowing landscapes and is the perfect spot to pitch a tent.”

ATHERTON TABLELANDS, QUEENSLAND

The Tablelands are about 90 minutes south west of Cairns and “provide some of the most beautiful Australian landscapes I’ve ever seen”, says Tim.

“Home to waterfalls, rainforests, lakes, mountains and valleys, this place has it all.

“Milla Milla falls is definitely the highlight and if you’re game, you can swim anytime of year. Nothing will refresh you like being drenched in this incredible waterfall.”

BOMBO QUARRY, NSW

On the south coast of Sydney, Bombo Quarry’s dramatic basalt columns make for an incredible photo and adventure, says Tim.

“There’s no location quite like Bombo Quarry with its raw beauty and contrasting elements of ocean and the basalt columns. It’s hard to believe it exists — and in our backyard.”

FOUR MILE BEACH, NORTH QUEENSLAND

Four Mile Beach is 45 minutes north of Cairns and 10 minutes south of Port Douglas.

“It’s an amazing stretch of coast and the perfect spot for time for yourself.

“This beach is like no other as it has the incredible beauty of Australian beaches but hasn’t caught the attention of crowds yet.”
