NORWEGIAN whale watchers caught on film the breathtaking moment a pod of six huge humpbacks surfaced within inches of their boat.

Svein Aasjord and Trond Ivarsø were boating in a fjord near the appropriately named Whale Island when they had the close encounter, Norway’s TV2 reported.

The pair had spotted the herd of whales some distance away and followed them into the fjord. As they approached they turned off the boats engines so as not to disturb the animals which were feeding on herring shoals.

Humpbacks typically work in a unit to drive the herring closer together, then swim under the shoal and rise to the surface open-mouthed to feed on the fish.

In the video the whales’ arrival is predicted by bubbles on the sea’s surface.

“Oh bloody hell!” one of the two friends can be heard shouting, according to TV2.

Five minutes later the whales again broke through the surface, but that moment was not captured on camera.
