Michigan man thought he was having a stroke, but was reaction to marijuana-laced brownies

A BAKING session has landed a 58-year-old man in hospital, and his teenage daughter in trouble after he mistook pot-laced brownies for the regular kind.

WHEN a 58-year-old Michigan man was transported to hospital, his daughter came to the rescue.

But not how you would think.

The man called police thinking he was having a stroke, but it was actually just a reaction to the accidental consumption of marijuana-laced brownies his daughter had made.

After recognising her father’s symptoms, the 17-year-old quickly owned up the sheriff’s office and said the symptoms were most likely from her brownie batch.

Her father was later released from the hospital and made a full recovery.

As for the daughter, she may be feeling more than the wrath of her father according to investigating Oakland County Undersheriff Mike McCabe.

“If it comes back as marijuana or something else, it’s going to the prosecutor. She’s 17 and an adult in the eyes of the law,” he told ClickOnDetroit.

“She’s not going to get it light, no. This will be a lesson for her and everybody else.”

With a number of US states legalising marijuana, these cases are becoming increasingly common.

The Children’s Hospital Colorado has seen an influx of young patients who have mistakenly ingested legal edibles.

Emergency room physician Dr Sam Wong said misinterpreting symptoms was often a waste of time and resources.

“With kids, when they come to ER, at least half the time we don’t know they got into marijuana,” he told ABC News.

“An ideal case, we know the exposure and know the amount, and don’t have to do further tests.”

Dr Wong said the most common symptoms found following the accidental consumption of brownies was laughing, lethargy, muscle seizures or breathing issues.

“We don’t see panic or anxiety. It’s mostly sleepiness,” he said.

Dr Wong said he often tells parents to store their goods out of reach of kids.

“I think in Colorado we’re trying to do the best we can to deal with regulations and packaging and warning labels to curb these unintended exposures,” he said.

These cases highlight the concern about the consequences when people confuse marijuana edibles with regular food.
