It turns out the booby traps in Home Alone 1 and 2 are more deadly than first imagined

THE Home Alone movies are quintessential viewing this holiday period and while entertaining, there are some massive flaws in the 90s classics.

A YOUNG Macaulay Culkin with both of his hands on his face is synonymous with one of the best Christmas movie franchises ever created.

The first Home Alone film saw eight-year-old Kevin McCallister get left behind when his family left on a Christmas vacation.

As the man of the house, Kevin had to stop two bumbling burglars from breaking into his family home and he did so with a series of elaborate booby traps.

Kevin battled the same burglars in Home Alone 2 when they attempted to rob a toy store in New York City. Once more he used a series of elaborate booby traps.

While entertaining, there are some massive flaws in the plot of the movie regarding the health of said criminals.

Take the scene from Home Alone where Joe Pesci opens the door and has his head burnt by a makeshift flamethrower before running outside and dumping his head in the snow.

New York ambulance driver Joseph O’Hare said the burn wouldn’t have killed the man right away, but it had potential to be fatal if he didn’t receive immediate treatment.

“He’s looking at possible 2nd or 3rd degree burns. A burn of this nature has the potential to damage underneath the dermis and affect deeper tissue,” he told Motherboard.

“One would expect to see deeply blackened skin with severe blistering or even some exposed bone in the area.”

Mr O’Hare said placing his head in the snow was the right move, but he likely would have gone into shock before that.

“I‘d be worried about hypothermia, hypovolemia, and infection. I’d also take precautions to protect his airway, as he may have an inhalation issue with this sort of injury.”

The next big attack came when Kevin attached paint cans to ropes and swung them down into the faces of the crooks.

While Mr O’Hare said it wouldn’t be deadly, it would cause some pretty horrific damage.

“In real life, their faces would be destroyed. Teeth would be sent flying, their noses would be broken, and multiple fractures would probably occur from the impact and the resulting fall,” he said.

“The trauma could possibly create a “brain bleed,” and a subsequent haemorrhagic stroke could lead to death.”

Mr O’Hare added there would also be the possibility of broken teeth getting lodged in their airways. Ewww.

After surviving the first encounter, Kevin gets cocky and takes on the criminals again in Home Alone 2 when he launches multiple bricks from a rooftop, hitting one of them in the head more than once.

In real life this move would see Kevin going to jail for a very long time, with Mr O’Hare saying it would result in death.

“I would not expect a patient to survive this at all. We’re looking at multiple skull fractures and I’d expect to see exposed brain matter all over the concrete, and that’s just from the first brick,” he said.

“Each consecutive brick to the same area of the skull would just compound the damage to the patient.”

The second movie also has Joe Pesci’s character receiving burns to the top of his scalp from another flamethrower, before being stuck in an explosion.

Mr O’Hare said while the flamethrower would have the same results as the first movie, the explosion would see Kevin on a double murder charge.

“With the building going through an explosion, he would probably have full thickness burns throughout his whole body,” he said.

“It’s unsurvivable. Exposure to the IDLH (Immediate Death To Life Or Health) conditions inside the building would definitely kill him.”

“Unlike the previous burn, there probably wouldn’t be a suitable place left on his body to take a skin graft. His inhalation risk increases more than tenfold because he’s inside.

“He’s breathing in multiple carcinogens and other hazardous materials. I’d be worried about my own scene safety in approaching this incident.”
