IN the history of bad ideas, none rate as high as the man that literally used his face as a billboard for companies wanting an unusual advertising campaign.

Hostgator Dotcom first started getting paid advertisements tattooed on his face as a way to earn cash, but now the gravy train is over and the human billboard wants his life back.

And it gets even better.

In order to remove the tattoos and return his face to normality, he is asking for your donations.

Hostgator has set up a GoFundMe crowdsourcing campaign to raise the funds needed to complete the costly procedure required to laser off the array of tattoos — mainly porn URL’s — that swarm his face.

Since starting his crowdsourcing campaign in April, Hostgator has raised just under $AU5000 and has been able to undergo a couple of tattoo removal sessions, although the job is far from complete.

“I still have several tattoo ads on my face, although faded to some degree,” he wrote on his campaign page.

“I have at least 10 tattoo ads on my head that are not faded at all that I cover with a hat and hair.”

Even though it’s a vast improvement from what it once was, Hostgator is still hoping to raise more funds to finish the job.

While many may be quick to condemn his actions, Hostgator points out the decision to get his face tattooed was one of necessity.

He said after being laid off from his job and receiving an eviction notice from his apartment, he was concerned for the welfare of his five children.

“All I could think about night and day was I could not allow my family to be homeless,” he said.

“I also knew no matter what, I would not do anything illegal.

“I decided that selling advertising space on my body might be the only way to keep my kids off the street.”

With the decision made, Hostgator began emailing websites to see if they would be interested in paying him to advertise on his body.

“Most were not interested. The ones that were wanted to advertise on my face,” he said.

“It was a very hard choice … but at the time I thought I had to sacrifice for my children.”

After getting his first facial tattoo, Hostgator received enough money to support his family for a month while he looked for other sources of income.

However, he soon discovered the repercussions for his lack of foresight when no one would hire him because he had a face tattoo.

In desperation to keep providing for his family, he sold another part of his face to a website and so the vicious cycle began.

“It got to the point where I was covered in tattoo advertisements as I am today,” he said.

“I was happy my kids were not homeless, but every time I looked in the mirror I cried, ‘who had I become?’”

Eventually, Hostgator ran out of space on his face, his family became homeless and he was contemplating suicide.

Reaching breaking point, he made an appointment with a mental health provider and was diagnosed with bipolar rapid cycling disorder.

After receiving treatment, he was offered a job as a peer support specialist at the same mental health facility that aided him in his recovery.

Now, he is relying on the good will of strangers so he completely remove his face tattoos and become a counsellor to assist people battling mental illness.

“If I can get my tattoos removed and change my name back to my birth name Billy Gibby then I can go after my dreams again and be the person I know I can be for me and for my children.”
