A SPECTACULAR light display is expected in the night sky as an annual meteor shower peaks this weekend.

NASA is predicting that the Geminid meteor shower will bring 100 and 120 meteors an hour into the Earth’s atmosphere at its height.

The shower began on Thursday and will continue to Monday. It is expected to peak Saturday, The Independent reported.

The annual event is named after the Gemini constellation, the space region from which its parent asteroid, 3200 Phaethon, comes.

As the asteroid travels close to the Earth, debris from the object falls in to the upper edges of the atmosphere, where it vaporises as light.
