BILL Clinton has said he wouldn’t be surprised if aliens one day visited Earth — he just hopes it doesn’t turn out to be like “Independence Day”.

The former leader of the free world made the comments while appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live, telling the comedian that it was likely that we are not alone in the universe.

“We know now we live in an ever-expanding universe,” Clinton said.

“We know there are billions of stars and planets literally out there — and the universe is getting bigger.

“We know from our fancy telescopes that just in the last two years more than 20 planets have been identified outside our solar system that seem to be far enough away from their suns — and dense enough — that they might be able to support some form of life.

“So it makes it increasing less likely that we’re alone.”

Mr Clinton also said that soon after he became US president in 1993 he ordered his aides to research the Area 51 military facility, “to make sure there was no alien down there”.

“I had all the Roswell papers reviewed — everything,” he told Kimmel, adding that if he there was evidence of alien life he would have released it.

“If we were visited someway I wouldn’t be surprised,” Clinton said. “I just hope it’s not like Independence Day.”

Mr Clinton said there would be some upsides to a hostile alien invasion.

“It may be the only way to unite this increasingly divided world of ours … think about all the differences among people of Earth would seem small if we feel threatened by a space invader,” Mr Clinton said.

“That’s the whole theory of Independence Day. Everybody gets together and makes nice.”
