A woman and a teenage girl have been taken to hospital after being thrown from their horses on the NSW Central Coast.

Paramedics were called to Cooks Road at Calga in the Glenworth Valley, just before 9.45am on Saturday after reports two riders were injured.

Five paramedic road crews and a rescue helicopter were called to the scene, with a critical care doctor and a critical care paramedic on board.

A woman, believed to be in her 50s, suffered a head injury and loss of consciousness in the fall.

She was stabilised at the scene and flown to the Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney in a serious, but stable condition.

The teenager landed on her head and shoulder and was taken by road to the same hospital in a stable condition.

NSW Ambulance Inspector Jeff Gillam said the paramedics quickly performed a spinal assessment on the injured riders.

“Paramedics and the specialist team worked quickly and carefully to stabilise these patients and get them to the specialist spinal assessment they needed,” Inspector Gillam said.

He emphasised the importance of wearing a helmet while horse riding, saying it likely saved the riders from more severe injury,

“Thankfully both patients were wearing riding helmets, without which their injuries could have been even more serious.”
