Two deer spotted wandering around Leichhardt in Sydney
Residents were surprised to spot two deer wandering around a suburb in Sydney’s inner west this morning - and police are baffled as to how they got there.
Police have spent Tuesday morning trying to catch two deer that were spotted wandering the streets in Sydney’s inner west.
Leichhardt Acting Inspector David Westgarth said it was unclear where the deer had come from, or how they came to roam the residential streets of Leichhardt.
“No one has reported missing deer. It’s a bit of a stretch for them to get all the way here from a national park. So we’re not really sure what happened,” Inspector Westgarth said.
As of midday, one of the deer remained at large. The other came crashing into a backyard around 11am, startling neighbours.
“I was in my sitting room reading a newspaper when I heard a crashing noise coming from next door,” local resident Nick Zavisic said.
“I was surprised to see it was a deer.”
Police said the deer had gotten stuck in a tight spot behind a backyard fence and would keep an eye on it until animal rescue volunteers arrived.
“The people who live there were pretty surprised,” Inspector Westgarth said.
Police started searching the area after about six people called police to report sightings of the deer.
“But each time officers showed up, it was too late. The deer were on the run,” Inspector Westgarth said.
The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has been contacted to take care of the animal that was captured.
