This video is enough to put any animal lover off eggs for life

IF you thought eggs for breakfast was a good choice, this disturbing video might just make you think again.

As a source of inexpensive, high quality protein and vitamins, most people think of eggs as a staple of a healthy diet.

But this video might just change your mind — as it reveals the secret anatomy of the everyday food.

The incredible footage, from American scientific journal publisher Cell Press, shows a fertilised egg’s yolk sac artery being injected with ink using a finely drawn glass capillary needle — and the results are astounding.

Of course, we all know that eggs eventually become chicks. But, having cut a window into the egg to expose the embryo and placed it under a microscope, the video reveals the visibly beating heart of a 72-hour-old chick embryo. It takes about 21 days in total for an egg to hatch.

The revelation is enough to tug at the heartstrings of any animal lover — but will you be swapping your eggs on toast for butter and jam?
