Terrifying moment snake knocks on door

The terrifying moment a massive brown snake “knocked” on the door of his home on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast has been captured in a video.

The footage, submitted to and shared on TikTok by @sunnycoastsnakecatchers Stuart McKenzie, shows the massive, deadly reptile on the deck of the home, most likely having emerged from the surrounding garden.

The snake then makes its way across the deck, eventually knocking its head against the glass door of the property.

“During this wet weather, as you can see in this video, this brown snake has come up off the lawn, out of the garden, and into somewhere dry which is up on the deck near the house,” McKenzie narrates over the footage.

“Now this is very common – over the last few days we’ve been getting a lot of calls still, usually with pythons – not as much brown snakes and venomous stuff – but a lot of carpet pythons doing exactly what this brown snake’s doing, hanging around the edge of houses, just trying to keep dry.”

McKenzie noted that it did look like the snake was trying to get inside, but wouldn’t “necessarily know that it’s actually inside someone’s house”.

“He just thinks of it as somewhere else he can explore, and somewhere he can find a bit of shelter and food,” he explained.

“The family did the perfect thing – they’ve shut the door and they’ve kept a safe distance, didn’t panic, kept kids and pets inside, and watched along and took note of what the brown snake’s doing.”

A separate snake catcher in southeast Queensland previously issued a similar warning to homeowners, off the back of the state’s recent flood devastation.

Harrison’s Gold Coast and Brisbane Snake Catcher Tony Harrison wrote on social media that terrestrial snakes – which live on the ground under rocks or at the bases of trees – had been flooded out, and would therefore have swum to the nearest temporary refuge in the floodwaters, such as homes or sheds.

“This means eastern browns and red bellies are on top of shelves and cupboards if the floods made it halfway up a building or they are just under bins, tyres and cupboards if the water level just came close,” he warned earlier this month.

“Also it’s after huge floods like this that originate out west and flow to the coast that I find species that are not normally found on the coast and monster-sized versions of the species we find.

“But they lived a happy uninterrupted life in a 500-acre property west of Beaudester that’s suddenly been washed down to us.”

Mr Harrison urged residents affected by the floods to remain vigilant during their clean up and keep an eye out for wildlife.
