A popular Sydney beach has been closed after a three-metre great white shark was spotted lurking in the water.

A series of beaches in Sydney’s south have been forced to close after locals spotted a three-metre great white shark.

The state government’s Shark Smart platform tweeted about the closure and said all beaches along Bate Bay in Cronulla were closed as of 3.45pm after the terrifying sighting.

Footage of the shark was posted to a community page on Instagram.

“It’s pretty big,” one person behind the camera can be heard saying while the shark’s fin continues to cut through the surface of the water.

The creature was swimming near Jibbon Head before lifesavers followed it around for an hour.

The beaches were later closed.
