Swarm of 20,000 bees takes over woman’s car

INCREDIBLE images have emerged of a swarm of 20,000 bees converging on one woman’s car. Yep, 20,000. What happened?

WHERE the Queen goes, the workers follow.

That’s the lesson a Welsh grandmother learned after a gigantic swarm of 20,000 bees converged on her car.

Carol Howarth, 65, described the “incredible” ordeal after a team of beekeepers, a park ranger and members of the public gathered to help and contain the swarm after it settled onto the back of her silver Mitsubishi Outlander.

Mrs Howarth had parked her car in Haverfordwest, in West Wales, to do a spot of shopping on Sunday when thousands of bees descended onto the vehicle.

It was believed the queen bee had flown into the car and thus, the bees followed.

Pembrokeshire Coast National Park ranger Tom Moses initially spotted the amazing sight and swiftly contacted members of the Pembrokeshire Beekeepers’ Association.

“I was the first beekeeper [on scene] and I realised it was in a dangerous place, I tried to brush the bees into a box, I was successful and they all trooped in,” Pembrokeshire Beekeepers’ Association. Dr Roger Burns told Hughesy and Kate.

“I think I probably had the queen at that stage. There were about 200 bees left outside, the trouble was a gust of wind came along and suddenly blew this box off the roof of a car.

“We think at that point the queen went back to where she’d been, we think where she went was into the hole where the rear wind screen wiper on the car [sits].

“The swarm went to her again”.

“It was quite a thing to see — certainly a ‘wow’ moment,” Pembrokeshire Coast National Park ranger Tom Moses told the UK’s Telegraph. Picture: Tom Moses/Facebook

Yet Mrs Howarth drove home believing the issue had been resolved, only to discover the bees had returned to the swarm the following day.

“The following day we had a phone call at about midday saying there was a swarm of bees on the same car,” Mr Burns described.

“We don’t know for certain if it’s the same bees, it’s likely to be the bees that were with her the previous day.”

The bees were finally removed that night.

“Apparently bees can swarm at this time of the year and it is a very strong instinct for them to follow the queen,” Mrs Howarth said. Picture: Tom Moses/Facebook
