A stomach churning item has been left behind by a snake that took brief refuge at the home of a New South Wales woman overnight.

The lengthy animal, later revealed to have been a common tree snake, left startling evidence of its eventful evening for the discovery of the home’s occupants on Wednesday morning.

What they found was enough to shock even the biggest of snake enthusiasts.

Almost the entirety of the snake’s skin, including its head, remained intact, making for what some described a “petrifying” outcome.

Incredible photos of the snake’s former layer of skin, measured to be just over a metre, were shared to the Facebook page Australian Native Animals, where it received a huge reaction.

“It seems I’ve had a visitor overnight but they left their jacket behind,” the woman who made the spooky discovery wrote.

“I have shivers up my spine and all my hair is standing on end,” one person wrote in a comment.

Someone else suggested the woman “move house”.

“Heart attack material,” another said.

Dozens of others however couldn’t believe how immaculately the skin had shed.

“Wow! That is fantastic! What an amazing thing to have happen at your home,” one wrote.

“That is a perfect specimen. I’ve never seen a full face before. You can even see the little rest-like rings. Very very few are complete. Often the snake sloughs in pieces as the skin hooks onto something and snags,” another said.
