A ROGUE tiger caused havoc at a Canadian zoo as it slipped out of its cage to pick a deadly fight with another tiger while terrified school students looked on.
A mature male tiger named Baikal entered a neighbouring pen housing two young Amur Tigers at Winnipeg’s Assiniboine Park Zoo.
Visiting students began filming the cage match on their phones, with one being heard to say: “Do you think that one’s going to die?”.
The students fears were realised as one of the young tigers, a two-year-old named Vasili, proved no match for the elderly tiger
“For the tiger, it was just a tiger being a tiger,” Assiniboine veterinarian Chris Enright told CBC.
“It was tiger defending his territory against another male that he would only see as a rival. You can’t fault him for being a tiger.”
“This is a tragic event and our staff are devastated,” Dr Brian Joseph, director of zoological operations at the facility, said in a statement.
“Baikal had lived at the Assiniboine Park Zoo for over five years and this is a heartbreaking loss for our staff and our visitors.”
