HEARTS have broken in the flood-ravaged town of Rockhampton after as a kangaroo fleeing floodwaters died in the arms of those trying to save it.

HEARTS broke in the flood-ravaged Queensland town of Rockhampton yesterday when a kangaroo fleeing rising water died in the arms of those trying to save it.

It comes less than a week after one of the biggest stories of Cyclone Debbie — the plight of Debbie the cockatoo — also ended in tragedy after capturing the imagination of people the world over during the Category 4 storm.

Police were flagged down by a member of the public just before 8am yesterday reporting that a frightened kangaroo was heading up East St towards Depot Hill.

Police found the kangaroo panicked and bouncing all over the road, The Morning Bulletin reported.

The roo crossed into Quay St and was struck by a vehicle in the middle of the road outside the Walter Reid Court apartments about 8am.

Members of the public rushed to help and comforted the injured animal while police directed traffic.

A vet was called but soon after 8am the roo died peacefully in the arms of its comforters.

With many animals displaced due to flooding in the Rockhampton region, motorists are urged to drive with extra caution.

If you see an injured or distressed animal, phone Wildlife Rockhampton on 0429 469 453.
