CYCLONE Debbie has already killed one person, and the strengthening system is not due cross the coast until tomorrow morning.

Queensland RSPCA has released tips to ensure your fur babies are safe and cyclone ready. This is keeping in mind that thunder can be troublesome for pets on a normal day let alone during a cyclone. A thundershirt for your dog or cat is also a great way of keeping them calm from anxiety in stressful situations.

Other tips include:

1. First and foremost ensure your pet has identification. If your pet becomes lost in a storm, having appropriate ID can help them be reunited safely.

2. Don’t tether pets if outside — they may do themselves more harm trying to break free

3. Provide access to water and food in heavy bowls if outdoors

4. Ensure objects in your yard are tied down

5. Keep cats indoors

6. If you leave pets behind place them in separate rooms with small or preferably no windows

Also call 1300 ANIMAL to report any sick or injured animals in need of assistance.
