THIS is the moment a donkey made an ass of himself by getting stuck in a manhole.

Nilo had to be rescued by firefighters after he fell into the uncovered hole next to a playground in Basel Country, Switzerland.

The agitated 13-year-old was trapped with just his head and front legs protruding until emergency services were able to extricate him.

A team of firefighters extricated the donkey from his awkward position.

He was spotted in the undignified position by passer-by Bruno Schneider, who alerted the police, The Local reported.

A team of firefighters hoisted the donkey out, unharmed except for a few “flesh wounds.” His hind legs had been stuck in the piping below.

Police spokesperson Meinrad Stoeklin said Nilo had taken the drama in his stride.

“He was very cool,” Mr Stoeklin added.

Happily. the tail ended well. The donkey his getting on with life as the mane attraction at his petting zoo home.

Authorities are investigating why the manhole was left uncovered.
