THE gruesome discovery of two headless seals on a South Australian beach has prompted an investigation.

A pair of decapitated New Zealand fur seals were found washed up on a beach in the Lower Eyre Peninsula last Thursday.

One of the animals, only a juvenile, was badly decomposed and another adult seal was discovered in a less decomposed state, a spokeswoman from Natural Resources Eyre Peninsula confirmed.

The shocking discovery of the maimed protected animals is being investigated by authorities.

The penalty for killing a fur seal is two years’ jail or a $100,000 fine.
