A pair of decapitated New Zealand fur seals were found washed up on a beach in the Lower Eyre Peninsula last Thursday.
One of the animals, only a juvenile, was badly decomposed and another adult seal was discovered in a less decomposed state, a spokeswoman from Natural Resources Eyre Peninsula confirmed.
The shocking discovery of the maimed protected animals is being investigated by authorities.
The penalty for killing a fur seal is two years’ jail or a $100,000 fine.
