Moment a Great White bites captured by undersea drone
EVER wondered what it would feel like the moment before being attacked by a Great White? This amazing new SharkCam footage may give you an idea.
JUST how lethal is a Great White? A new video gives us a look at its powerful bite.
Footage released by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution captures the moment a shark bites.
It’s prey? An underwater camera drone.
The Great White appears curious.
It inspects the drone.
It appears annoyed.
It attempts to intimidate the drone.
It vanishes into the depths.
Then it unsheathes its teeth — rolls its eyes back into its head — and lunges upwards.
The following bite is brutal.
The REMUS drone carried six cameras during the attack, which happened late last year.
The institution has only recently released the footage, which has since been picked up by the Discovery Channel and edited into a compilation.
With it is the gut-wrenching sound of razor-sharp teeth clamping on the drone’s 1.5m long metallic hull.
The drone, which can dive up to 100m deep, was part of a Discovery Channel sponsored research project analysing the predatory habits of sharks in the waters around Mexico’s Guadalupe Island.
But the hunter unexpectedly became hunted.
Up to 10 people are killed in shark attacks around the world each year. Some 25 million sharks are killed in the same time frame by humans.
The REMUS drone survived to serve another day. It is now being deployed to follow less aggressive sea life — such as sea turtles.
