Little pygmy possum found on Kangaroo Island for first time since bushfire

It’s believed to be the smallest possum in the world and after a devastating bushfire season it was feared we’d never see them again.

3 billion native animals lost due to summer Bushfires

A tiny possum that it was feared might never be seen again after a horror bushfire season destroyed part of its habitat has apparently survived the wildlife apocalypse.

Surveys undertaken on South Australia’s Kangaroo Island have found a number of possums for the first time since almost half the island was burned during bushfires in January.

The wildlife conservation group Kangaroo Island Land for Wildlife surveyed 20 sites on the island, finding southern brown bandicoots, native bush rats, Western and Little pygmy possums, brush-tailed possums and tammar wallabies.

The Little pygmy possum is the world’s smallest known possum, weighing less than 10 grams.

It’s typically been found in Tasmania, Kangaroo Island and parts of Victoria and South Australia.

Ecologist Pat Hodgens told ABC it was important to survey populations “to try to do everything we can to protect them to ensure that they hang around”.
