King of the Road takes on King of the River at notorious Cahills Crossing

THE occupants of this tiny car diced with death in more ways than one while taking on infamous water as they met a big croc — longer than the car.

The occupants of this tiny car diced with death in more ways than one while taking on the infamous Cahills Crossing in waters up to their doors as a big croc — longer than the car — casually slid past right in front of them.

The saltie slips across the overflowing crossing with very little concern as the oversized rollerskate ploughs across the causeway, barely slowing down as it rapidly bears down on the ‘Territory speed bump’.

At some points the rushing water is only centimetres below the car’s wound down windows.

Kakadu National Parks tourism and visitor services manager Leanne Paige said she was surprised the people who were travelling from Gunbalanya to the Kakadu side attempted the crossing.

“Obviously this is not the kind of behaviour we are looking to encounter,” she said.

“It shows you exactly how … how rich that waterway is with crocodiles.”

The crossing hit a high tide at 7.59m at 1.15pm on Thursday with Kakadu National Park staff capturing the footage just after lunch.

Staff also captured videos of dozens of large crocs coasting in the water waiting for fish to swim up stream.

“It’s a great spot to enjoy the spectacle of the crocs but act responsibly and safely and cross when the water levels are low and in an appropriate vehicle and view from a safe distance,” she said.

Cahills Criossing is notorious for its crocodiles.

A 47-year-old man was killed in a crocodile attack when he tried to walk cross it in January this year.

Jabiru storeman Kerry McLoughlin was decapitated by a 5.1-metre crocodile at the crossing in March 1987 in front of horrified onlookers.

The 40-year-old had been fishing with his son.
