A KIND-HEARTED veterinarian’s simple gesture has taken the internet by storm, and with very good reason.

On Sunday, US vet Andy Mathis posted a story to Facebook about a little stray dog named Gracie. Gracie was found in bad shape on the side of the road one Friday night. The person who found her couldn’t afford to look after her, and called a vet asking whether anything could be done.

When she was brought in, the vet found she was in even worse shape than expected. She was starved, dehydrated, anaemic, hypothermia and had a vaginal prolapse. While part of him thought there may be no hope for her, he took to Facebook for advice, and decided to give her a chance.

Now, Dr Mathis has become an internet sensation.

Given the trauma she had suffered, Graycie was unable to eat unless there was nobody in the room.

In an effort to make her feel more comfortable around people, he took to eating his breakfast in her cage next to her.

This heartwarming video shows Dr Mathis casually drinking coffee and eating his cereal out of a dog bowl. He occasionally pets and feeds Graycie from his hand.

The video has been viewed more than five million times, and shared more than 80,000 times.

The task ahead is to find Graycie a loving family willing to take her in. Dr Mathis said she still “needs a little more time to heal physically and emotionally”, but was hopeful a home will soon be found for her.

In the latest update, Graycie has moved to a cage next to a few other dogs. Dr Mathis has reported that she seems fine, and will be learn to take cues from watching other dogs playing and walking.

Wow! I take a nap for an hour or so, and come back to find Graycie's video being shared and with lots of views. I'm...
