A 55-year-old woman has been mauled by a kangaroo in her Melbourne backyard, leaving her with gruesome injuries.

Kerry Muller was picking fruit at her Cranbourne South property when the five-foot marsupial ripped apart her jacket and tore into her skin.

“All I saw was claws coming at me,” she said via Nine News.

“So I pivoted and dived into some bushes so quickly, but by that stage he was already on me.”

“I was shocked at how quickly he ripped apart my jacket.”

She was rushed to Frankston hospital where she was treated for three hours. The attack left her unable to work for four days.

Ms Muller said she had a “respectful relationship” with the local ‘roo, so she was left in shock when it suddenly turned on her.

“Usually we have a quite a respectful relationship,” she said.

“He sees me he moves away, I see him he moves away.

“He changed his mind and he set himself on me. Totally shocked.”

However, the attack hasn’t changed her opinion on the country’s national animal.

“I admire (kangaroos) and I think they‘re magnificent,” she said.
