THIS sorrowful-looking feline’s face has made world headlines and attracted a mass following on Instagram — but there’s a reason why he looks like this.

Luhu’s owner Maggie Liu of Beijing in China, told ABC News in the US that his sad face evolved as a result of eye infections he had as a kitten.

Luhu, a grey tabby cat, was born on August 12, in 2012. The infections he had left his owner with no choice but to let a vet conduct an operation on his eyes.

“He got a pretty major operation on his eyes at that time [and] the sequelae is affected by his vision, so Luhu always opens his eyes pretty hard when he needs look at something,” Ms Liu said.

She said she was surprised at how quickly his sad look become popular on Instagram, where he has more than 76,000 followers and counting.

“I put my cats pics on Instagram just for fun, actually,” she said.

“I never [thought] about Luhu [getting] so popular like this.”

Ms Liu said he is “very friendly” and lives with her two other tabby cats, Barher and Bardie.
