Incredible photos show 14 crocodiles feeding on dead whale carcass

STUNNING photos have captured the moment at least 14 crocodiles emerged to feed on a washed-up whale carcass off Western Australia.

AT FIRST glance all you can see is a huge whale carcass, but look closer and you will see at least 14 saltwater crocodiles enjoying a free meal.

Helicopter pilot John French of KAS Helicopters captured images of the incredible feeding frenzy while conducting a private scenic flight on Wednesday.

KAS Helicopters owner Adrian Crook told news.com.au the whale was washed up on the reef on the main part of Montgomery Island.

He said the photos captured at least 14 crocodiles, which were themselves about three metres long, feeding on the whale carcass, with two of them even seen emerging from its belly.

“We’ve certainly all seen dead whales before but it was the first time we’ve seen one on the island, washed up on that part of the reef,” he said.

“The crocs were coming from just about everywhere.”

He said the smell was overpowering and the whale was probably already dead when it washed up on the sand.

The reef surrounds the Montgomery Islands located off the spectacular Kimberley coast in Western Australia.

Mr Crook said it was likely the whale would also become food for sharks once the next big tide came back in.
