Speedboat Chase, Hippopotamus Edition

IT’S a well-known fact that hippos kill more humans than any other African animal. But this video, filmed on the Chobe River in Botswana, shows the astonishing speed with which they can move through water.

The video, posted by David Jackson, shows the hippo deep-diving in pursuit of the speedboat, leaving a visible wake. The driver of the speedboat senses the danger and accelerates away, before the animal resurfaces ... much closer to the boat than the wake would suggest.

It is commonly quoted that the hippos kill 3000 humans every year, and they are renowned for their aggressive, territorial nature.

They can move at speeds up to 8km/h in water, and can hold their breath underwater for up to five minutes.

Move over Jaws ... the hippo emerges from the Chobe river.
