A GIANT coconut crab, possibly smuggled, has left residents of a Hawaiian town stunned.

The 2.2kg monster crab walked down the road like it owned the joint.

Holly Canatere found the crab a boulevard in the suburbs of Honolulu.

“Everybody just stopped in the middle of the road because they could see something crawling,” she told Khon 2 news.

“I thought it was a remote-control type of thing.

“It just kept walking like it had no care in the world when it crossed the street,” she said.

The crabs are illegal in Hawaii and can also be quite dangerous because of their enormous, strong claws.

They can also grow to the size of a garbage can.

The coconut crab, Latin name Birgus latro, is the largest land-living arthropod in the world and can grow up to about a metre in length.

It is found across areas in the Indian and Pacific Oceans and as far out as the Gambier Islands.

Basically, it goes where the coconut trees spread.

While they eat different kinds of fruit, they are most known for climbing coconut trees to claw down their dinner.

But Hawaii officials were reported to be concerned about the crab because an infestation could see them raid garbage bins, eat native birds, or go for any food they can get their claws in to.
