A HUGE whale stranded on a Nicaraguan beach has died despite efforts by tourists and locals to get it back to sea.
About 300 people tired to push the 18.5 metre-long blue whale back into deep waters.
The whale beached itself on Friday morning at Popoyo beach, in the town of Tola, some 111 kilometres south of the capital, according to the Environment Ministry’s delegate in the region, Mario Rodriguez.
The large group of people— from Nicaragua and elsewhere — spent the day trying to get the whale back into deeper waters, but gave up in exhaustion as the sun went down.
The last hope was that high tide would carry the creature out to sea, Rodriguez said, but that never happened.
The Pacific region off Nicaragua’s southern coast sees a lot of humpback whales and dolphins at this time of year.
