Colossal alien wasps’ nest discovered in Melbourne home

A homeowner was horrified when they discovered an alien structure infested with deadly insects growing on their bathroom wall.

A pest control company was called to confront a nightmarish wasps’ nest growing inside a Melbourne bathroom.

The massive 1.5m nest has gone viral online, with videos showing the alien-like structure emerging from the wall of the bathroom.

DAP Pest Control manager Dale Armel explained how his team removed the monstrosity during a Today show segment on Wednesday.

“It’s like something out of Stranger Things,” host Karl Stefanovic said.

“It was terrifying and massive. It was incredible,” Mr Armel said.

The Melbourne home was unoccupied throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, giving the wasps plenty of time to build the huge nest.

The colossal size of the nest – which is usually basketball-sized – suggested it could have been built from as early as September 2021.

“They can be aggressive. I had to approach it over two days,” Mr Armel said.

He said European wasps usually built their nests underground; however, this nest appeared to be made by eating wall plaster and combining it with wood fibre and saliva.

The pest control expert said it was the largest European wasps’ nest he had seen in his career.

“I reckon this is a record. It was as big as a 70-inch television,” he said.

“I will have nightmares about this, it’s like an alien spaceship,” Stefanovic said.
