Chaos as three horses break loose on Sydney roads

Sydney motorists have shared their wild sightings of three escaped horses making a break for it early on Tuesday morning.

Horses break loose on Sydney's main roads

Sydney motorists have recounted the bizarre moments they spotted three horses galloping along main roads in the city’s south early on Tuesday morning.

Drivers first alerted authorities around 5.15am when the horses were sighted loose on Rocky Point Rd after escaping their paddock.

A man named Michael called into 2GB radio on Tuesday morning after sighting the herd while filling up at a service station.

“I just saw the weirdest thing driving to work just now, I saw three horses galloping (around Rocky Point Rd),” he said.

“I had to pinch myself – I thought it was a dream.”

Or a nightmare for the equine adverse.

“No riders on them … not stitching you up one bit at all,” Michael

“I just pulled into the petrol station to fill up and another guy said, ‘Did you just see that?’, and I thought, ‘Thank God you told me that’.”

Another caller named Luke said he saw the “same thing” as he was leaving the gym.

“(I saw) three horses running down the street with four cop cars chasing them, trying to round up the horses,” he said.

Running through Sans Souci and Taren Point, the horses headed south and caused traffic mayhem after crossing the Captain Cook Bridge.

Motorists were forced to swerve to avoid hitting the three broncos before St George Police Area Command and Traffic and Highway Patrol Command officers used their vehicles to direct the horses off the bridge.

The horses were guided onto Woodlands Rd and Alexander Rd to an industrial complex in Production Rd at Taren Point where emergency services used ropes to tether the horses and gave them carrots until the owner was alerted.

NSW Police Inspector Luke Scales said that authorities received multiple reports just after 5am of three horses running southbound on Rocky Point Rd at Brighton-Le-Sands before continuing to Sans Souci and running southbound on Captain Cook Bridge.

Police were able to herd the trio into the industrial complex on Holt Rd using their vehicles.

“The police did an excellent job in guiding the horses with their vehicles and Fire and Rescue NSW and highway patrol attended and were able to tether the horses with some ropes,” Inspector Scales said.

The horses were then brought under control using bread and carrots.

“We found them pretty quickly when we had to this morning,” he said.

Inspector Scales also confirmed that they were “definitely not police horses”.

“I’ll just reiterate to the community that we’re always on hand to help regardless of how rare or strange something is,” he said.

The trio have now been safely returned to their paddock.
