Beloved police dog fatally struck by car while hunting for allegedly dangerous fugitive
Queensland police have lost one of their beloved canine colleagues, who died while searching for an allegedly dangerous fugitive.
A Queensland police dog has been killed in the line of duty after he was hit by a car while on the scent of an allegedly dangerous fugitive.
Rambo and his handler Sergeant Ian Grigoris were tracking a man on the Bruce Highway at Maryborough, on the state’s Fraser Coast, about 12.30am on Saturday when the tragedy occurred.
The dog was taken to a nearby vet but could not be revived.
“All QPS dogs are part of their handler’s family and the bond between handlers and their dogs makes them inseparable,” police said in a statement.
“PD Rambo was a Fraser Coast local and lived in the area when he was a puppy.”
He graduated from training in 2015 and often helped find missing people.
One of his more notable accomplishments was successfully hunting down two property offenders on Australia Day in 2019.
The State Dog Squad Capability Coordinator will conduct a review of Rambo’s death.
Police are calling for information to help track down the fugitive who they say fled through bushland near the Bruce Highway after they intercepted his car.
“A subsequent search of the vehicle located a substantial amount of dangerous drugs, cash and other drug-related material,” police said.
They say he is considered dangerous and may be armed.
“It is believed he may still be in the Maryborough area, however also has links to Childers.”
He is described as caucasian in appearance, about 180cm tall with a bald head and brown eyes.
Anyone who knows of his whereabouts is asked to call police immediately on triple-zero and not approach him.
