Baby giraffe dies after running into California zoo fence

A BABY giraffe, born just last month, has died after running into the fence of a California zoo during a special show.

A BABY giraffe born at a California zoo last month has died after running into a fence in an exhibit.

ABC 30 Action News reports the male giraffe, born on September 9 at Fresno Chaffee Zoo, died on Sunday afternoon.

It happened during a special preview event for the new African Adventure exhibit that is set to open on Thursday.

A zoo spokeswoman says a necropsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death.

The giraffe weighed 85kg at birth and was the 12th reticulated giraffe birth in the zoo’s history.

The zoo posted a picture of the animal on its Facebook page after he was born last month.
