Aussies stumped by picture of carpet python hiding in Queensland backyard

A picture of a giant snake lurking in the garden of a Queensland backyard has stumped Aussies as they scramble to find its hiding spot.

Local business Snake Catcher Brisbane and Gold Coast shared the photo of the garden to Facebook, challenging his followers to “spot the snake” hiding somewhere in the picture.

The one and only hint they gave was that the snake was not hidden in the fence.

The guessing game came thick and fast, with users sending back zoomed in screenshots of the garden and circles drawn over the pictures. Some were more precise with their guesses than others – like one woman who gave up and circled the whole garden.

“I don’t like playing snake hide ‘n seek,” one wrote.

“I can’t find it but now I really need to know,” another commented.

“Great, I’m not sleeping tonight … I NEED THE ANSWER!!!”

Though some said they were spooked by the garden puzzle, a few likened the hunt to popular children’s guessing book Where’s Wally, one asking: “could we pop some red and white on it and call him Wally? I’d surely find it then”.

Another person even suggested the snake catcher make a book out of these “spot the snake” pictures, because “they would outsell Where’s Wally”.

Only a few people found the large snake — with most mistaking branches, piles of leaves, or bark for the slithery interloper.

The next day the snake catchers revealed the hiding spot of the coiled-up coastal carpet python.

And, I’ll admit, even with the reveal, I struggled to see it.

But apparently the python was hiding near the base of one of the trees, coiled up and camouflaged in the garden bed.

“This coastal carpet python flawlessly utilised its camouflage abilities to blend into the garden,” the snake catcher wrote with the reveal.

Carpet pythons live almost anywhere in Australia, except Tasmania, and are one of the most commonly seen snakes in suburban backyards – most often in Queensland.

Named for their patterned markings, which resemble carpet patterns, these pythons can grow up to 4 metres in length – though most do not exceed 2.5 metres.

They are typically found in undergrowth, in tree branches, or in the roof space of houses and sheds, where they are likely looking for rodents to eat.
