The staff at Sydney zoo are in a state of ‘deep shock and grief’ after one of its most treasured animals died on Friday morning.

Sydney Zoo’s treasured chimpanzee Mogli has died.

The zoo made the shock announcement after staff found the beloved animal dead in its chimpanzee habitat at the Blacktown zoo on Friday morning.

We are currently investigating the circumstances and once more information is known we will make a further statement,” Sydney Zoo said in a statement.

“The team are in a state of deep shock and grief.”

Patrons at the zoo were asked to stay in their cars and visitors were temporarily delayed entry as zookeepers worked to recover Mogli‘s body.

Listeners rang in to 2GB Radio telling Ray Hadley that people were being told to stay in their cars.

“It’s getting packed now … people everywhere.

“They’re a bit insistent on you getting back in your car,” one listener said.

NSW Police said they had “no involvement” and the zoo was managing the situation.
