Abused dog left blinded but makes miracle recovery

Vets were “shocked” when they found this dog in a horrible condition. But after some TLC, they noticed some remarkable changes.

Animal rescuers were “shocked” when they found a puppy who had been so badly abused that there were “too many fractures to count”, with the dog also being partially blind from its cruel treatment.

However, after nursing her back to health, the dog lovers noticed some remarkable changes.

Parts of her vision returned and she can now walk.

The dog is named Evangeline.

She is still just a puppy.

The foster puppy went missing in July and when she was found three months later, vets were “shocked”.

The dog, named Evangeline, was taken to an emergency clinic in the US. After leaving the clinic, she was then fostered by one of the vets, but they’re looking for a more permanent home.

The Human Society of Northern Utah shared the extent of Evangeline’s injuries on Facebook, hoping to find whoever had done this and also to gather donations for the dog’s recovery.

Both sides of Evangeline’s jaw had been broken, there were “too many fractures on her ribs to count”, and her legs were “severely” broken.

But the biggest area of concern was her brain.

“She has a fractured skull and neurological damage including blindness and concussions with a haematoma,” the post said.

“Every open wound is infected because she couldn’t use the bathroom other than on herself.”

Luckily, Evangeline has been responding well to treatment and is making a rapid recovery.

The dog has to wear a muzzle for about six weeks to help her jaw bones knit back together.

“Evangeline continues to amaze us with her spirit and fight. She is eating on her own despite her jaw fractures,” volunteers at the Humane Society also said in a Facebook update earlier this week.

She “appears to have some vision, although it is not clear how much yet,” they added.

“We are anxious to see what happens with her brain injury and how she will recover from that.

“Our main focus now is pain management, rest and nutrition.

“It will take time to know the extent and long-term effects of the trauma she endured.”

The case is under investigation by authorities.
