A Melbourne fisher has been left stunned after a great white shark mauled her first tuna catch

A fisher has shared the “most amazing experience” of her life after a great white set its sights on her first big tuna catch.

Great white shark mauls woman's tuna

A Melbourne woman has shared the shocking moment a great white shark chomped down on her huge tuna catch.

The giant fish reportedly took Isabella Sesto about an hour and a half to reel in, marking her first barrel.

In a clip of her fishing with a group in South Australia’s Cape Jaffa – off the state’s south-east coast – screams can be heard erupting as the shark approaches.

“It’s a white, it’s a big white, it’s a big white,” Sesto shouts in the video.

Despite the shark chomping down on the fish, the group manages to pull the giant tuna onto the boat.

However, the tuna wasn’t without injury: the shark caused massive tears and bite marks across the tail.

Speaking to news.com.au, Ms Sesto doesn’t seem to mind the bitten off tail.

In fact, she said the rare experience has left her stoked.

“Having an experience like that just makes it one in a million, and I wouldn’t change it for anything,” she said.

“Like who cares that it bit half the tail off? I couldn’t care less, it still weighed 102 kilos so it’s still a barrel, so I still conquered my goal.

“So I was absolutely stoked.”

She added that she’s been targeting a barrel tuna for about five years now.

“I’ve just had no luck. It’s just one species I cannot conquer,” she said.

“And this finally happened and it just had to be grabbed by great white but who cares? It still weighed 102 kilos so that was pretty cool.”

In the video posted to her Instagram, she called the shark a “jerk”, expressing mixed emotions.

“I still got it … oh my heart’s kinda broken but, pretty cool.

“I’m happy but I’m sad. Like I don’t know what to feel. This jerk, this big great white’s come, bit half my tuna off and it’s my first tuna.

“That is the most amazing experience in my life,” she finishes in the video.

Soon afterwards the shark turned its sights on the boat’s motor.

“Oh, he’s eating your motors,” she shouts.

In a separate Instagram post, Ms Sesto emphasised how much the experience meant to her.

“My friends would know I have put so much time into these fish and as the fight was over and I had the tuna at the boast a great white smacked it!” she wrote.

“I’m beyond happy for the most epic experience of my life.”

Having been fishing and hunting for about 16 years now, Ms Sesto said that sharks have been her favourite species since she was little, making the experience even more special for her.

And she’s definitely not scared of the creatures, either.

“In summer we go surf fishing for them, and we’ll grab them like, head deep in water and bring them onto shore and then cut the wire, get the hook out, and then swim with them and release them,” she told news.com.au.

“We’re a bit crazy down here,” she added with a laugh.

In a pinned Instagram post from December she shared another impressive catch: a fish over 20 pounds.

“We have put in so much time into these fish this season and it’s moments like these that make battling the constant banjos, large amounts of weed, early mornings and late nights well worth it!” she wrote in her post.

Her account features several other catches, including a local Mako shark.

The Advertiser reported that a woman was bitten by a shark in Beachport on Monday just 120 metres from the shore.

Pam Cook required more than 200 stitches during a five-and-a-half hour surgery after she was bitten on her right ankle and right thigh.

Mentioning the recent attack, Ms Sesto urges people to be mindful of sharks and stay safe as temperatures rise and they edge closer to the shore.
