RUSSIA has once again flexed its military might after launching four powerful ballistic missiles as part of a successful training exercise.

It is the second such display in the space of a month.

The Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation confirmed the military fired three intercontinental-range ballistic missiles from submarines and another from a transporter erector launcher as part of the drill.

A statement by the Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation said a missile was launched from a road-mobile transporter erector launcher around 800 kilometres north of Moscow.

“A squad of the Strategic Missile Force fired a Topol intercontinental ballistic missile from Plesetsk towards the Kura test range in Kamchatka,” the statement said.

Three others were launched from the sea, Moscow confirmed.

“A nuclear submarine of the Pacific Fleet carried out a salvo launch of two ballistic missiles from the Sea of Okhotsk towards the Chizha testing range in the Arkhangelsk region.

“A nuclear submarine of the North Fleet fired a ballistic missile from the Barents Sea towards Kura.”

Supersonic Tupolev-160, Tupolev-85MS and Tupolev-22MZ strategic bombers were also involved in the drills with all missiles hitting their targets, the MoD said.

Last month Moscow launched other missiles as part of a separate drill.

The Russian military test-fired its RS-12M Topol intercontinental ballistic missile from the Kapustin Yar launch facility in south-western Russia.

Moscow said its practice warhead successfully hit a designated target at the Sary-Shagan firing range in Kazakhstan, an ex-Soviet neighbour with which it shares close economic and military ties.
