WhatsApp users hit Twitter to tell others of how they “couldn’t cope” without the app which is widely used among teenagers to message their friends.

WhatsApp has over 450 million users each month with 70 per cent active on any given day. They have also had strong growth, with one million new registered users each day.

The deal is Facebook’s biggest acquisition and comes less than two years after Mark Zuckerberg’s firm raised $US16 billion in the richest tech sector public stock offering.

Facebook reportedly sought to acquire another hot messaging firm, Snapchat, for $US3 billion last year.
