South Korea is investing $1.5 billion in a 5G 'movie in a second' service
SOUTH Korea is looking to roll out a $1.5 billion 5G network by 2020 that will be able to download a movie in a split second.
SOUTH Korea is looking to roll out a 1.6 trillion won ($1.5 billion) 5G wireless network that will be capable of downloading a movie in a split second.
The South Korean science ministry said that it aims to implement the technology, which will be 1000 times faster than current 4G services - within six years.
"We helped fuel national growth with 2G services in the 1990s, 3G in the 2000s and 4G around 2010. Now it is time to take pre-emptive action to develop 5G," the ministry said in a statement.
"Countries in Europe, China and the US are making aggressive efforts to develop 5G technology ... and we believe there will be fierce competition in this market in a few years," it said.
Under the current plans, the trial 5G service will be rolled out in 2017 and the full commercial service is hoping to be up by December 2020.
The ministry has said that priority in 5G will be given to Ultra-HD and hologram transmission.
Yes, hologram transmission. South Korea is awesome.
It's also worth mentioning that by 2020 when South Korea will have its 'movie in a second' speed wireless internet, Australia will only have just received its 'movie in 6-minutes' fibre to the node internet connection.
