‘Weird’ Aussie driving habit questioned by American au pair

A common Aussie driving habit has frustrated one American expat, who told Tik Tok followers she’s found a hack to help “fit in” with the locals.

Aussie drivers are slammed for “weird” driving habit

Aussie drivers have been called out for a “weird” driving habit by an American au pair, who says she’s found a time-consuming hack to try and fit in with the locals.

The apparent Aussie habit of backing into parking spaces was noticed by Caroline Armstrong, who moved from Nashville to Western Australia in September.

In a video shared to her Tik Tok account, she said “almost all Aussies back into car spaces” no matter where they are.

The 23-year-old said she had become “so aware of the habit” that she now drives around car parks looking for a space to drive through so she could pretend she had reversed into the spot.

She joked her hack allowed her to “fit in” with the locals.

“I‘ve noticed that every single person backs into their parking space here, which is weird. I can’t do that,” Ms Armstrong said in a Tiktok video.

“So, in order to fit in, I’m still driving around the whole parking lot to pull through and look like I backed in. Why does everyone back in here?”

Several commenters seemed shocked at the fact Ms Armstrong could not reverse into a parking space.

“What do you mean you can’t do that?” one commenter said.

Others advised her that not everyone in Australia does it.

“Not everyone reverses into car spots. It is safer when you are leaving, but you do you, no one will notice,” one person wrote.

Another commenter explained: “So many people parallel park because of the ease of reverse cameras, and because it’s easy for the quick getaway.”
